Situation and medium-term forecast

Rainfall leads to reduced burden over the weekend!

Until Friday afternoon the weather forecast predicts summer-like weather with temperatures of approximately 20° C. During this time pollen allergy sufferers must expect high levels of allergenic burden. However, the weather conditions will change over the weekend and intense rainfall may result in a short-term allergenic relief.

As soon as the weather conditions turn more favourable again, the birch pollen season is expected to start very quickly because a majority of catkins are already reaching readiness to flower. Especially at climatically favoured areas in the lowlands birch pollen allergy sufferers may already experience low to moderate burden before the weekend.
Even though our reference plants are showing an average or slightly below average amount of catkins, people who are sensitized to birch pollen may still experience intense allergenic burden at the start of the season.
Due to cross-reaction, the flowering of hornbeam may already causes burden for pollen allergy sufferers who are sensitized to birch pollen.

In addition to that, ash pollen is causing allergenic burden as well. More and more trees are reaching the peak pollination period, leading to high levels of burden. Depending on the intensity of rainfalls, people who are sensitized to ash pollen may experience more or less relief.

The pollination period of alder is ending. The pollen concentrations in the lowlands are not expected to reach the threshold for causing symptoms anymore. At higher elevations low to moderate symptoms are still possible.
The pollen of corkscrew hazel is still causing low levels of burden in close vicinity of this ornamental plant.

What else: The pollen spectrum contains also pollen from acer, elm, poplar, willow, rose family, cypresses and yews.

Forecast from 23.03.2023
Note: The model results give an indication of the expected start of flowering, based on information provided by local pollen warning services with direct reference to the local situation. Start of flowering is not to be equated with the beginning of the pollen season. When the start of flowering is achieved, the majority of the plants have the potential to release pollen, but only when weather conditions are favourable.
