Distribution:
central Europe as far as the Caucasus and the Black Sea, prefers semi-shade or shade, requires heat but is not sensitive to frost, in a sub-oceanic climate, in broad-leaved forests, and in central Europe grows well on foothills, hills and river floodplains
Appearance:
deciduous shrubs or trees, leaves alternate, ovate and pointed at the end, with doubly serrated leaf margins, male flowers arranged in drooping catkins, female flowers in pairs located in the axil of a bract, the fruit is a small, single-seeded nut
Allergenicity:
low, cross-allergenicity to pollen from birch, alder and hazel
