Pollenatlas

    description:
    outline:
    circular to oval
    size: 99 (93-107) µm
apertures: monoporate pollen, porus with operculum and a distinct anulus
pollen wall: thin, scabrate exine, mostly thin intine.
additional attribute: granular cytoplasma with numerous starch granules
remark: The wind-pollinated family of grasses comprises a great number of species, whose pollen are hardly distinguishable with light microscopy. In aerobiological routine, solely the smaller pollen from wild grasses are thus separated from those bigger ones of the cultivated grasses (in particular maize and cultivated rye)

    remarks to the plant:
Maize (corn) is an imposing tall annual grass and is one of the oldest known cultivated plants. Homed in Central America, it is widespread today in manifold cultivars all over the world. This cereal is sensitive to cold and needs much of sunlight, water- and nutrition resources. Depending on the cultivar and time of sowing, the male and female inflorescences appear separately between July and September. Males stand in terminal panicles, whilst females grow in the axis of the lanceolate leaves.
