Hazel
Latin name:
Corylus avellana, C. colurna
Description:
This shrub needs plenty of light and therefore it is found mainly on the margins of woods. The male catkins are bright yellow and easy to detect from a distance. Corylus colurna is occasionally found as an ornamental tree.
Start of the season:
Depending on the weather, the flowering season might start already at the end of December, whenever temperatures rise significantly above 5 degrees Celsius.
Allergenicity:
The allergenicity of hazel is moderate to high.
Both alder and hazel pollen cross-react with birch pollen. Very sensitive birch pollen-allergic subjects will suffer when hazel- and alder pollen are in the atmosphere.
