Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus
Description:
Not very high or large, rather belonging to the smaller trees. A tree of central Europe, resembling to the ordinary beech. However, the stems are not as tall and straight, but many times splitted into a number of stemlets which originate from one spot, similar to the closest related hazel bush. The bright gray, smoothly barked stem is humpy in longitudinal direction. In contrast to beech, the leaves are distinctly serrated. Male flower catkins appear shortly before or latest together with the leaves.
Start of the season:
Hornbeam season lasts from late March to April.
Allergenicity:
Hornbeam shows low to moderate allergenicity.
Crossreactions are known with birch, alder, hazel, beech, oak, hopbeam and sweet chestnut.
